RESEARCHER TERESA CASIMIRO (REQUIMTE/FCT) WON THE R&D CATEGORY AWARD OF "INVESTMENT SUPPORTS IN THE FUTURE" SPONSORED BY ALMADA FORUM

Requimte's researcher Teresa Casimiro won with the project: "Freeze-drying of porous structures and polymer particles produced by supercritical technology.
FCT RESEARCHERS INTEGRATE THE TEAM THAT RECEIVED THE SANTANDER-TOTTA/UNL SCIENTIFIC MERIT AWARD (2012/2013)

Angelina Sá
Palma, FCT Investigator and Head Researcher of the Glycan Microarray Laboratory
and Ana Luísa Carvalho, Assistant Researcher, both from the Macromolecular Crystallography group, at
REQUIMTE (FCT-UNL Chemistry Department), integrate, in collaboration with the
Principal Investigator Paula Videira, from FCM-UNL, the team awarded with the
Santander-Totta/UNL Scientific Merit award. The research project, entitled
“Antibody Engineering for the Treatment of Breast Cancer”, proposes the
bioengineering/designing of antibodies to specifically target cancer cells, and
simultaneously engage a patient’s immune system to kill these tumor cells. This
study is an important advancement for the development of new and effective
therapeutic strategies.

Diana Madeira was awarded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation under the “Programa de Estímulo à Investigação” with the work "Thermal stress on tidal-pool organisms - a proteomic approach". Diana is studying marine organisms from the intertidal zone that are often exposed to extreme temperatures. In this work, Diana studies the effects of these extremes at a cellular and molecular level, emphasizing organism´s functional and biochemical changes. The main objective is to analyse several stress indicators and examine the proteomes of these species when exposed to extreme temperature conditions. These studies are important since they allow us to understand the physiology of the stress response, improving the capacity of conservation and management of marine resources in view of the climate change scenarios foreseen for the next century.
