Research Interests
Development and application of the use of the Atomic Force Microscopy. I have been applying the AFM to a wide range of problems in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Nanotechnology and the Biological Sciences.

Current fields of activity are the study of DNA-nanoparticles interactions for biosensor and gene detection applications, in-situ studies of protein insertion into lipid membranes, AFM measurements of novel noble metal nanoparticles obtained by green chemistry techniques, and study of electropolymerised polymer films. A further topic of continuing interest is the use of AFM to study ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic surfaces and nanoparticles. I am collaborating with various members of Requimte in both Porto and Lisbon, and external collaborations include the study of malarial Hepatocytes with combined optical / atomic force microscopy with researchers from the Instituto de Medicina Molecular in Lisbon. Other collaborations include study of natural products as antibacterial treatments, nanoindentation studies of cell membranes, red blood cell morphology, and educational AFM projects with researchers from Portugal, Spain, the UK and the US.
