Research Group: ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Objectives:

The main objective of the group, in accordance to international trends in Analytical Chemistry, is to search and develop new technologies that provide robust and readily accessible chemical information, in parallel with the development of clean methodologies of analysis
Based on their expertise, the analytical chemistry group activities support transversally the other main areas of REQUIMTE, while pursuing some autonomous lines of research to create new analytical knowledge and understanding. The major objectives for the reporting period were:

  •  to characterize and extend the use of new tools, namely ultrasonic devices and microwave assisted extraction in analytical sample treatment on frontier areas of research such as elemental speciation, proteomics and pesticide traceability.
  • to propose new continuous flow concepts and coupled sensors to integrate all analytical protocol steps in self-contained analysis modules.
  • to assess heavy metal complexation proprieties of Good´s organic pH buffers increasingly used in biological/biochemical studies and in environmental speciation studies; to extend the studies to new biodegradable green complexones.
  • to improve quality in Portuguese brewing industry, by evidencing nutraceutical properties of beers and clarifying the influence of starting raw materials and industrial processes on them; to characterize the impact of technological factors of the malting and brewing processes in the preservation of organoleptic properties of beers.
  • to devise clean processes to remove and recycle heavy metals from anthropogenic activities.
