Research Interests
Metabolite profiling of marine and terrestrial species, by chromatographic techniques (LC-MS, HPLC-DAD, GC-MS).
Assessment of the biological potential of those matrices, namely concerning antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and neurodegeneration, by cellular and non-cellular in vitro models and in vivo system, and establishment of composition/activity relationships.

Evaluations include determination of the effect on the levels of reactive species of oxygen and nitrogen, effect on pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 and interleukin 6) and prostaglandins, their metabolites and isoprostanes, effect on cholinesterases, muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and protection against neurocytotoxic agents.
Current research is focused on marine organisms as source of bioactive agents, namely on the antimicrobial capacity of macroalgae, particularly antifungal activity, by evaluating the effect on ergosterol and chitin composition, respiratory chain function and dimorphic transition.
