Research Centres @ REQUIMTE

REQUIMTE–Rede de Química e Tecnologia was established in 1996 as a consortium between CQFB-UNL and CEQ-UP, and in 2002 a non-profit scientific organization with the same acronym was set-up with two partners: Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) and Universidade do Porto (UP). The latter, REQUIMTE – Associação, became in the last four years the main host institution of the “Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde” (LAQV).

ICETA–Instituto de Ciências e Tecnologias Agrárias e Agro-Alimentares, established in 1992, is also a non-profit scientific organization led by Universidade do Porto with the main task to host several research units. ICETA has been acting as a co-host of LAQV in the last four years.

FCT-UNL – Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (UNL), also a host institution for LAQV, is the largest academic unit of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, founded in 1977 and dedicated to research and higher education in Science, Technology and Engineering.

As clearly defined in their bylaws, the missions of UNL and UP stress the development of high quality and internationally recognized research, which is being implemented through fundamental policies to strength their role as Research Universities, where the quality of research is the essential support for high quality of teaching, especially at postgraduate level. As such, Research Units are fundamental instruments of this strategy, to whose success they are fully committed.

UNL and UP actively promote the research activities of their academic staff and allocate a significant part of the staff’s workload to R&D+i. The two Universities directly fund research activities through the academic staff salaries, which represent a substantial part of the human resources of REQUIMTE and of its gross budget.

1 Researchers: FCT-UNL, through the Department of Chemistry, will commit its permanent staff and researchers hired on a temporary basis to the execution of the project. Permanent staff from Universidade do Porto, through several participating Faculdades (Ciências, Ciências da Nutrição e Alimentação, Farmácia, Engenharia, Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar), and also from Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) will be committed to the execution of the project, as will researchers hired by REQUIMTE and ICETA.
2 Administrative and technical support will continue to be provided by staff at FCT-UNL, REQUIMTE and ICETA.

FCT-UNL provides 2,100 m2 of laboratory space for researchers of LAQV; at Universidade do Porto 600 m2 at Ciências, and 1,300 m2 at Farmácia; at ISEP 350 m2. All laboratories are fully equipped with standard facilities for research in chemistry and engineering, and access to specialized equipment is granted to all researchers (see item 6.4 of this proposal for a brief description).

As a final note, FCT-UNL, UP, through its Faculdades, and also ISEP provide working spaces for researchers and postdocs hired by the LAQV, as well as open spaces for PhD students.
