The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) has conferred the title “ESCMID Fellow” for professional excellence and outstanding service to the profession and the society to Luísa Peixe, head of the Bact_Drugs Lab at UCIBIO and Assistant Professor at Faculdade de Farmácia - Universidade do Porto (FFUP).
“I'm very honoured and happy for such a recognition from ESCMID, the leading society in clinical microbiology, and where we can find the ideal spirit of Europe during its activities of promoting professional development of their members (diverse, inclusive and merit oriented). Being among the first fellows with this recognition is impressive and at the same time a great responsibility”, says Luísa Peixe.
It is the first time that ESCMID, an highly prestigious European society in the field of microbiology, attributes these honors to its members. The merit-based title “ESCMID Fellow” recognizes individuals who have achieved professional excellence and rendered outstanding service to the profession and the society. The title can be obtained by appointment by the ESCMID Executive Committee, for excelling ESCMID members as “ESCMID Fellows”, or by selection after application (opens in summer 2017).
Luísa Peixe’s research interests include the study of the ecology and evolution of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in different ecological niches and the evaluation of the role of the urinary microbiota in human health and disease. In addition to fundamental understanding of these issues applied research is dedicated to new biomarkers identification, design and production of quick and inexpensive tools for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.
ESCMID is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infection-related diseases. This is achieved by promoting and supporting research, education, training, and good medical practice.
