Research Interests
I am an enthusiastic scientific research professional with 11 years of experience in Academia. My main area of expertize is related with Structural Biology, namely Macromolecular Protein Crystallography (MX). In the past recent years I have conducted several projects aiming to solve the 3D structure of proteins with high impact in human health and biotechnological processes, particularly mammalian aldehyde oxidases (AOX) and bacterial nitrate reductases (Nap).

My short CV comprises a PhD (2011) in Structural Biology at REQUIMTE from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia - Universidade Nova de Lisboa in collaboration with the Instituto Mario Negri (Italy) and the University of Potsdam (Germany) where I was a visiting research scientist for several periods of time. Since 2013 I hold a Post-doctoral research position at UCIBIO. During my research professional experience I have published 14 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals from which 7 as a first author and one in NATURE CHEMICAL BIOLOGY (Coelho et al, 2015).

We have solved the first crystal structure of a mammalian aldehyde oxidase - the mouse AOX3, and more recently the structure of the human enzyme in the substrate free form and in complex with the substrate phthlazine and the inhibitor thioridazine (hAOX). I am now very much interested in studying the molecular determinants responsible for clinical drugs interactions with AOX to better understand the role of the enzyme in the failure of several clinical trials Phase I. I am also studying the impact of several single nucleotide polimorphisms (SNP) described in hAOX and their altered structural features which have proven to cause impact in the metabolism of the different individuals.

During this years I have also gained experience in protein expression and purification and in biochemical characterization of macromolecules (mainly using thermal shift assays). I am also very much familiarized with the use of several different synchrotron radiation sources in Europe (European synchrotron radiation facility, ESRF - Grenoble, France; Diamond Light Source, DLS - Didcot, UK; and Swiss Light Source, SLS - Villigen, Switzerland) in which we have conducted several experiments for data collection, analysis and interpretation."
