The long lasting collaborating project between the Nanomedicine Group, led by Pedro Viana Batista from UCIBIO, and the Materials for Electronics, Optoelectronics and Nanotechnologies Group, led by Elvira Fortunato and Rodrigo Martins from CENIMAT-I3N, has recently been given further recognition with the publication of a video abstract that features on the front page of the Biotechnology and Bioengineering website. The featured video highlight follows the publication of an article entitled "Single nucleotide polymorphism detection using gold nanoprobes and bio-microfluidic platform with embedded microlenses".
The video shows the design and fabrication of a microfluidics device for integrated analysis. The chip design encompasses innovative channel design for optimal mixture of reagents and sample (DNA/RNA) for subsequent colorimetric analysis via a gold nanoprobe based molecular diagnostics assay. As proof of concept, the system was applied to the detection of a single base difference associated to obesity.
Authors of the publication: Iwona Bernacka-Wojcik, Hugo Águas, Fabio Ferreira Carlos, Paulo Lopes, Pawel Jerzy Wojcik, Mafalda Nascimento Costa, Bruno Veigas, Rui Igreja, Elvira Fortunato, Pedro Viana Baptista and Rodrigo Martins.
