Title: CO2 utilization as renewable carbon source in the production of organic carbonates

The use of CO2 as an abundant, cheap, non toxic and renewable carbon source for the synthesis of organic chemicals, is an attractive research goal. One of its most promising applications is the production of organic carbonates. Recently, the importance of this topic has grown significantly due to the belief that being a versatile molecule, cyclic carbonates, may become a platform to introduce CO2as a renewable feedstock into different areas of the chemical sector. Most effective catalysts for CO2 conversion into organic carbonates are usually homogeneous Lewis acidic metal-based complexes which are difficult to separate and reuse. Process intensification strategies are though of crucial importance for the widespread industrial implementation of the technology. Synergies between the utilization of efficient homogeneous catalysts, non-volatile ionic liquids and tuneable physical-chemical properties of CO2at supercritical conditions, will be presented.


Short Bio

Ana V.M. Nunes completed her PhD in Chemical Reaction Engineering at FCT-UNL in 2008. Afterwards, she worked as a project manager in the field of drug delivery (Formulation/Micronization) at IBET. In 2013, she was co-founder of a technology based start-up Zeyton Nutraceuticals which uses a patented process for the extraction and purification of a natural extract from the by-products of olive oil production. Since 2015, she is an Assistant Researcher (FCT Investigator) at LAQV-REQUIMTE. Her main line of research regards the utilization of CO2 as a renewable C1 building block in the production of organic carbonates. Other interests include the development of innovative and more sustainable industrial processes using CO2 as the reactant and/or solvent and separating agent of reaction products, process integration as a method of process intensification and high pressure CO2 technology.
