Ana R. Freitas, Post-doc in the BacT-drugs Lab, at UCIBIO in Faculdade de Farmácia do Porto, was awarded an ESCMID observership by the prestigious European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Since 2009 that ESCMID supports the training of ESCMID members to visit ESCMID Collaborative Centres (Clinical Microbiology and/or Infectious Disease Centres of excellence in Europe and beyond) in other countries to learn about diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as well as to establish new contacts and foster international exchange.
Ana R Freitas’s CV and training proposal evaluation resulted on her selection to have a funded one-week training period (2-7 December 2018) in the Statens Serum Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark. Based on her recent publication (Freitas et al. JAC 2018), she was invited by two internationally recognized experts working with enterococci (Anette Hammerum and Henrik Hasman) to build a web tool for detection of virulence genes in Enterococcus faecium within a website (CGE, Center for Genomic Epidemiology) massively used to extract data from bacterial genomes. During her training, they started constructing this database allowing Ana to engage and discuss with different researchers and to learn more about bioinformatics tools for bacterial genomic analysis (report available here). This database will allow the prompt identification of relevant E. faecium virulence markers associated with a higher pathogenicity potential and will be useful for users from different Public Health contexts, namely, to improve strategies of diagnostics and infection control.
Ana R. Freitas is doing her post-doc research in the field of bacterial antibiotic resistance surveillance and diagnostics at UCIBIO, under the supervision of Luísa Peixe, leader of the BacT-drugs Lab and Professor at the Biological Sciences Department (Microbiology) in Faculdade de Farmácia do Porto.
