Ana R. Freitas, Post-doc in the BacT-drugs Lab, at UCIBIO in Faculdade de Farmácia do Porto, was awarded the 2018 Travel Award promoted by Pathogens. An Evaluation Committee organized by Pathogens Editorial Board attributed Travel Awards for two young investigators to support attending a conference in 2018 (800 CHF/720 EUR).

The winner was selected based on her curriculum path and scientific merit, and on the scientific excellence of the work presented in the prestigious European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID), occurring annually in an European capital, with rejection rates around 30-35%, and joining world’s leading experts in Infectious diseases, Infection control, Clinical Microbiology and Public Health. Ana R. Freitas was co-author of 8 abstracts presented in the 28th ECCMID 2018 (21-24 April 2018, Madrid, Spain) and the presenting author of three of them including one selected for oral presentation (European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Final Programme).

The award allowed her to orally present an international collaborative study joining researchers from UCIBIO/FFUP and Tunisia (Université de Tunis El Manar) entitled From farm to fork: dissemination of a Tn554::fexA-optrA in linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecalis clones from chicken faeces and meat in Tunisia. This relevant work evidenced the dissemination of identical E. faecalis strains in humans, animals and food samples of different countries as being resistant to linezolid, a last resort option in the treatment of multidrug-resistant infections caused by different Gram-positive bacteria.

Ana R. Freitas is doing her post-doc research in the field of bacterial antibiotic resistance surveillance and diagnostics at UCIBIO, under the supervision of Luísa Peixe, leader of the BacT-drugs Lab and Professor at the Biological Sciences Department (Microbiology) in Faculdade de Farmácia do Porto.
