On 29 October 2019 the kick-off meeting of the COST Action CA18238 - "European transdisciplinary networking platform for marine biotechnology", took place in Brussels, Belgium. This Cost Action will run from 29 October 2019 until 28 October 2023. The consortium includes 80 researchers from 28 countries. Susana Gaudêncio, leader of the Blue Biotechnology & Biomedicine Lab at UCIBIO in FCT NOVA, is a nominated Management Committee (MC) Member of this COST Action.

As part of the event, Susana Gaudêncio was elected Leader of the Working Group 2, WG2-Tools and Infrastructures. This working group aims to “establish an inventory of existing tools and infrastructure from action representatives that will serve to identify gaps for successful marine biotechnology process implementation and provide links to institutions that can be in future contacted for specific tasks”.

The overall aim of the COST Action Ocean4Biotech is to bring together experts in the field of marine biotechnology, to provide a platform for sharing experience, knowledge and technologies, and to design a roadmap for a more efficient and rapid development of marine biotechnology research in Europe and beyond. To best of our knowledge, such a large, diverse and geographically dispersed network of experts in marine biotechnology does not exist. Since marine biotechnology is still in its infancy, we believe this is the optimal timing to create this efficient, operational, motivated, inclusive and sustainable network with a serious and ambitious commitment for proactive dissemination and science communication activities.
