The UCIBIO Annual meeting took place at FCT NOVA in the 28th and 29th of September. We gathered UCIBIO researchers to meet each other and learn about our different expertise and science to promote networking, consolidate ongoing or start new collaborations.
On the first day Maria João Romão, UCIBIO director, presented UCIBIO at a Glance, showing the scientific organization of the unit, the strategic plan and the current research strengths and synergies within and between the thematic lines and research groups. As a final balance, Maria João Romão presented the scientific productivity of UCIBIO, the research funding in 2015-2018 period, highlighting how active UCIBIO has been in Technology Transfer and Translation to Industry.
UCIBIO Meeting counted with three keynote speakers: Filipe Assoreira (P-BIO - Portugal's Biotechnology Industry Organization), Maria João Bonifácio (BIAL-Portela & CIA SA) and Margarida Casal (CMBA - Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology, University of Minho).
The session Industry & Academia Partnership included short presentations by five invited speakers from Industry: Filipe Aguiar (73100lda), João Fonseca (Biosurfit), Manuel Pacheco (Plux), Orfeu Flores (StabVida) and Rui Frade (Sumol + Compal), and a round table An Industry view of Academia with the five industry speakers, Filipe Assoreira (Co-founder and CEO of Nano4 Global) and Isabel Rocha (Pro-Rector of NOVA).
Four scientific sessions were organized around the four thematic lines:
TL1 Biological and Biomolecular Interactions
TL2 Diagnostics, Drug Discovery and Development
TL3 Safety in Human and Environmental Health
In these sessions, UCIBIO researchers had the opportunity to present and discuss their work amongst each other and with other UCIBIO researchers.
The meeting included two invited lectures from external R&I units to strengthen the existing collaborations between UCIBIO and these R&I units: Ana Paula Duarte (CICS-UBI - Health Sciences Research Center, University of Beira Interior) and Carlos Fontes (CIISA - Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - University of Lisbon).
The PhD student poster session, sponsored by NANO4Global, was a great opportunity for networking and for PhD students to discuss their work. UCIBIO director, Maria João Romão, and UCIBIO vice-director, Félix Carvalho, announced poster awards in the closing session:
1st prize - Ana Rita Lima, UCIBIO at FFUP
2nd prize - Viviana Correia, UCIBIO at FCT NOVA
3rd prize - Carla Teixeira, UCIBIO at FMUP
The UCIBIO meeting was a great opportunity to discuss science and ideas with colleagues and speakers.
