Bruno Fonseca and Marta Almada, researchers at the Biochemistry Lab at UCIBIO in Faculdade Farmácia - Universidade do Porto (FFUP), are studying the effects of synthetic cannabinoids, as well as phytocannabinoids from the plant Cannabis sativa, in the placenta cells and uterine cells. They have fully characterized endocannabinoid system machinery throughout pregnancy, contributing to uncover the role of endocannabinoids in maternal tissues remodelling. The results suggest that the consume of synthetic cannabinoids and phytocannabinoids can cause adverse effects in placental development and foetal growth.
Bruno Fonseca and Félix Carvalho, UCIBIO vice-director and Professor at FFUP, are part of the working group appointed by the Portuguese General Pharmaceutical Council to present a report stating their advice about the use of cannabis for therapeutic purposes.
